The water beckons…

Illista and her sister fled their homeland when invaders killed their parents and tried to enslave the girls’ innate water magic. Now disguised as servile Waki, Illista serves the Segra people on the dusty high plains, far from the warm oceans of her childhood.

One night, lured by the siren song of the Segra’s sacred lake waters, Illista sheds her Waki disguise for a swim and becomes witness to a murder attempt on the Segra chief’s only son and heir.

War looms…

Joral’s marriage to the daughter of another tribe will seal the peace between the warring nations and strengthen both halves of the Segra people against invaders from the West. When he is poisoned and nearly drowned on the night of his betrothal, a mysterious sprite of a woman saves his life.

Was the attempt on his life the workings of a rival, or was it tied to the sudden arrival of Western mercenaries who seek the missing water witches?

A secret revealed…

When Joral discovers Illista’s secret, will he sacrifice her to secure peace for his people? Or will he follow his heart for the sake of a water sprite who may be the Segra’s only hope for restoring the rains to the drought-ridden land?

Call the Rain eBook Kristi Lea Reviews

Krisit Lea's Call The Rain is an a cross between PNR and Fantasy, it'd say. It took me a bit to get into the world building and settle into the story even though it's only roughly 117 pages. The characters are based in tribes, sort of American Indians crossed with Renaissance Country Folk. Two tribes are at odds and to find some peace, the elders have arranged a marriage of the Prince, Joral, our hero and the Princess from the opposing tribe. The story starts with the engagement celebration upon which, the prince has been poisoned and stumbles into the water. Now comes the PNR part. Among the prince's people are people whom appear more like Hobbits but are called Waki. Waki are the working class citizens and among those people are supernatural beings of immense power whom have taken on the Waki form to hide in plain sight. One such person is a water nymph (possibly), named Illista, our heroine, whom is on the run with her sister. When they were younger, a madman, invaded their tribe and killed everyone but the sisters escaped. He's now hunting the two and will stop at nothing to find them. While walking around the tents of the tribe, Illista hears the water calling to her, asking her to come help. She discovers the prince, saves him and then transforms back into her Waki self. When the Prince awakens, he thinks he's been rescued by a Angel or something only to find he's alone. When he makes his way back to the Tribe, he hires two Waki to help him and his friend as assistants. Little does he know, one of the Waki is his missing savior and possible lady love......now if only he wasn't engaged......hmmmmm.

So what I liked about this story was the uniqueness of the world. Take a little fantasy, add a half cup of war and sprinkle some romance ala Romeo and Juliet and BAMB! You got your story. There were some good action scenes and the romance was believable. What I felt could use some improvement was the fight scene at the end, it seemed to jump around a lot and wasn't a very smooth read. Either it was from different POV's or so many things were going on that I wasn't sure who or whom was doing what. There's ice, there's rain, then there's a wall of fire, then there's supposed to be people are fighting with swords and bows but then they're not, it was really more of a jumble of images and as a reader it was difficult to visualize. Also I found the verbiage throughout a bit uneven. Some made up slang was used to describe things and then a common colloquialism would be used, i.e. "right as rain". It seemed that if we are to believe that this is another world, there shouldn't be a term used from our world, if that makes sense? Lastly, I liked the buildup of the romance but I thought the ending where both main characters profess their love, was a bit much. I didn't feel they were there yet. Maybe just have them do the equivalent of dating by just having the characters go swimming. If then you felt like it needed more of a HEA, do a quick epilogue with them getting married or something?

Whew, well with all that being said, for a novella, I did enjoy the story and would recommend it to anyone who wanted a PNR/Fantasy read.
